London

London, is the capital of Great Britain. Its a very big city.London is situated on the river Thames. The Thames is the deepest river inBritain. There are 27 bridges over the Thames. Tower Bridge is one of theoldest and most beautiful bridges in London. It is more than 100 years. About 9ml people live in London.

London is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It isalso a very old city. London consists of 3 main parts: the City, the West Endand the East End.  The City is the Heart of London, its business centre.There are many banks and offices there. The West End is the richest part ofLondon. The main interesting places are situated there. And the East End is aworking part of London.

The political centre is Westminster. Westminster Abbey isthere.  It is the traditional place of coronation for English monarchs.Many people are buried in the church.

There are many sights in London. Trafalgar Square is the mostpopular place for people to meet. In the middle of the square there is NelsonsColumn, which is 51 m. high.

The Queen/the King lives in Buckingham palace.  Itis the most famous place in London. There are 600 rooms in it. It has an indoorswimming pool and a cinema.

One of the greatest English churches, St. Pauls Cathedral ,is not far from the Tower of London.  The famous English architectSir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after theGreat Fire. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. It is aroyal church.

The most interesting museum is the Tower of London. The Tower ofLondon was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King’s Zoo. Now it’s amuseum. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London.  Peoplebelieve that London will be rich while the ravens live there.

 

LONDON SIGHTSEEINGS

 

1. This is Buckingham Palace. It is the official home of the Royal Family. If the queen is at home the flag is up.

The palace has 775 rooms and 78 bathrooms. There is a cinema and a swimming pool. It also has its own post office and police station. There are about 400 people working here. There are even 2 people who are responsible for the 300 clocks in the palace.

 

 

 

 

2. Trafalgar Square is a big square in the middle of London. Lord Nelson, a famous general, stands as a statue here, in front of the National Gallery. Every Christmas since 1947 a Norwegian Christmas tree stands here. It is a gift from the Norwegian state for all the help they got from the Brits during the Second World War.

3. London Eye is the biggest Ferris wheel in the world. It is by the river Thames in the middle of London. On the other side of the river lies the Houses of Parliament.

 

4. This is the Houses of Parliament, or the Palace of Westminster. Before it became the home of the parliament it was the Royal Family’s home. Most famous is the clock tower, and the clock “Big Ben”.

5. This is St Paul’s Cathedral. It is a very big church (церковь). The bishop (епископ) of London works here.

6. Madame Tussaud’s is a wax cabinet. Here you can see wax dolls of famous people.

 

7. This is Westminster Abbey. It is also a church. The queen was crowned here and many famous people are buried (похоронены) here. The royal weddings are held here. The church lies right behind the Houses of Parliament.

8. Piccadilly Circus is a square in the middle of London. In the south-east corner of the square stands the Shaftesbury memorial fountain from 1893.

 

9. This is the Tower Bridge.

It was opened in 1894 by the Royal Family. The bridge goes over the river Thames. It is 244 metres long, 16 metres wide and weighs 11000 tonnes.

 

10. There are many different sorts of transportation in London. You can choose to go by bus, the red double deckers, with a cab, or by the underground. It is also easy to walk in the centre of the city.

 

11. This is the Tower of London. This is where the crown jewels (драгоценности короны) are being held. The fortress (крепость) has been used as a castle (замок), a prison, and a place of execution. The guards of the Tower are called beefeaters (гвардейцы). They live at the castle together with their families. About 100 people live here.
