Who is the Modern Student? |
Who is the modern student? The athletewith his college scarf? The bluestocking, cycling to her lecture? The activisthurling abuse at a politician?
These days the students you are mostlikely to meet are the checkout girl at Sainsburys1 or the waiter in yourfavourite bistro.
The modern student works: full-timestudent no longer means someone who spends time in libraries or lectures,with an occasional vacation job. At many universities, most students have jobsduring term-time. At London Guildhall , more than 80 per cent of our studentswork during term for between five and 25 hours a week.
Why do they do it? For some, it is certainly to fund a car or to financeevenings in the pub. For many, however, whose families are too poor to help, itis to keep body and soul together. Some have a natural aversion to building upa large debt to the Student Loans Company. Many mature students feel guiltyabout their wives, husbands or children supporting them during a collegecourse, and work to reduce the burden.
Juggling study with work is hard. Itrequires skills of time management that would be envied by many managementconsultants. As one student, Aidan, put it to me: I need lectures tostart at 10am, not because of a party the night before but because then I canuse a cheap railcard. I must be away by 4pm to pick up my daughter, leave herwith her gran, and get to my evening job. When do I write my essays? Well,theres the weekend and early mornings.
Many students still live in college roomsor halls of residence. But others stay at or close to home, where jobs areeasier to come by. Often, they commute to classes and live in crampedaccommodation, a shared room where there is nowhere to study. There is notenough money for books, let alone a computer. It is no surprise that theysometimes wonder if they can cope or will be forced to drop out.
