The small homeland of L.A. Govorov
His father Alexander Grigoryevich was a burlak.
At the same time, he held the position of a clerk at school in Yelabuga and a sailor at the merchants of the Staheevs.
His mother Maria Alexandrovna was engaged in housekeeping and raised four children.
Govorov Leonid Alexandrovich was born on 22 February 1897, in the village of Butyrki, Yaransky district (now the territory of the Soviet district of the Kirov region).

Childhood and youth
In 1907 his family moved to the city of Yaransk, 2 years later to Yelabuga.
In 1916 Leonid graduated from school and entered the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute.
In 1923 he met in Odessa, and later married Lydia Izdebska, the daughter of a former manager of a Polish estate. In 1924 their son Vladimir was born.

The impact of the war
on Govorov’s life
In 1916 he graduated the Elabuga Real School with honors.
Then he passed the exams for the department of shipbuilding at the Polytechnic Institute and moved to Petrograd.
At the end of 1916, he came under mobilization and ended up in the active imperial army of Russia.
Young recruits were sent to the Konstantinovsky School, where they were supposed to take a course in artillery. -

Start of military activity
In December 1916, Govorov — a cadet of the Konstantinovsky Artillery School
Since 1919 L. Govorov in ranks of the Krasnaya Army.
In the 20-30s he graduated higher artillery courses, military academy Frunze, courses of military translators.

Defense and Blocade of Leningrad
8.09.1941 – 27.01.1944
Throughout the summer of 1942, Govorov strengthened the defensive line and participated in the Sinyavskaya operation, the main goal of which was to break the blockade of the city.
In September 1942, the fact that it was impossible to complete the task became obvious, and on the first of October the army returned to its original position. -

At the end of the month, Leonid Alexandrovich began to develop a plan, the preparation of which began a month later.
In early December, the Supreme Headquarters allowed the implementation of the Iskra plan, the main goal of which was to break the blockade of Leningrad. -

January 18, 1943 — breakthrough of the blockade of Leningrad
Developing a successful operation, the troops of the Leningrad Front advanced almost one hundred and twenty kilometers forward, settling on the western bank of the Narva.By the first day of spring 1944, Soviet troops advanced almost three hundred kilometers to the west, destroying several enemy divisions and liberating the Leningrad and partially Kalinin regions.

Lifting of the blockade
27.01.1944In January 1943, the blockade of the city was lifted, and Colonel-General Govorov was awarded the Order of Suvorov, first degree.
In September of the same year, with the direct participation of Govorov, the Leningrad-Novgorod offensive plan was developed.
The purpose of the operation was to liberate the entire Leningrad region from occupation. It began on January 14, and on the 27th the victory salute was already sounding in the city, informing the residents of the end of the blockade. -

On January 27, 1945, on the first anniversary of the lifting of the blockade of Leningrad, Marshal L. A. Govorov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Post-war career
In the postwar years Govorov was commander of the Leningrad Military District, and then Chief Inspector of Ground Forces.
In 1948 he was appointed Commander of National Air Defence Forces, and in 1952 he also became Deputy Minister of Defence.
He died in March 1955. He was cremated and his ashes in the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.
